The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's True Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
